Tips for parents and teachers
Education and knowledge about Down Syndrome and children with Down Syndrome is key to overcoming this disability. Here are some helpful tips, both for parents and teachers, that can help aid them both in the classroom and at home.
1. Again, learn about this disability! The more people understand the more positive encounters will occur for students with Down Syndrome
2. Do not treat a child with disabilities in a "special" way. They can be treated and loved just like a child without disabilities.
3. Encourage Independence. Children with Down Syndrome tend to rely heavily on parents, aids, and teachers, however, ,but encouraging them to be independent and take on their own initiatives, they will be able to participate in everyday activities more smoothly.
4. Be patient and hopeful. All children will take time to learn how to take part in activities and grow mentally as an individual.
5. Be as concrete as possible at all times. This included dividing tasks into very specific steps to avoid confusion
6. Keep your expectations clear and consistent
7. Parents and teachers must continue to communicate with each other. Parents will give insight and valuable information on the child's behavior at home, and the teachers can do the same about the behavior at school
